Biography
Born Romie Clark Smith in Nashville, Tennessee. Romie at the age of six years was already performing on WMAK, the Mutual radio station affiliate in Nashville. This program was hosted by Joe Allison who would become a legend in the country music industry.
Very soon after Romie started appearing regularly on WSM, Nashville's clear channel 50,000 watt NBC radio affiliate. During these early years he worked with artists who had become the "Who"s Who" in Country Music. Hank Williams Sr., who had Romie appear on his personal radio program broadcast live from "Hank and Audrey's Corrall", Chet Atkins, Maybelle Carter and The Carter Family, Owen Bradley, The Jordanaires, Roy Rogers, Anita Kerr, Roy Acuff, George Morgan and Minnie Pearl were just a few of the many who encouraged Romie.
By 1952 at the age of nine years (at this time Romie had his own radio program ) he received his first offer to record for Capitol Records.
Later on, additional offers came from Mercury and MGM Records.
As Romie matured musically into his teenage years, he developed a passion for jazz, swing and big band music. Not only was he now singing with local society bands but by this time he had become an accomplished trumpet player and was also playing with these bands. It was during this time he had the opportunity to work with Snooky Lanson of the highly acclaimed network television show "Your Hit Parade" and Pat Boone, another Nashville musical icon.
Romie continued honing his skills for the next three decades choosing to work the society circuit, country clubs and corporate affairs.
So from "Nashville's Little Singing Cowboy" to "Nashville's Mister Swing", Romie Smith has become a singer's singer / performers performer. He gives the lyric a reading that is masterfully manipulated always presenting a fresh new feeling that adds excitement to its every performance. As with the lyric, he listens to the melody as it talks to him, then implements his personal smooth presentation, including creative dynamics and "knock out" punches. Being a musician Romie has an incredible sense of rhythm and tempo which allows him to interpret the music in his own personal and inspiring way.
Just recently Romie worked a jazz club with Larry Carlton, today's "Master" jazz guitarist, who declared Romie to be " a great singer " !!! He should know.
Romie Smith has always had that "special stuff" that only a few artists possess. He sings, he entertains and he communicates. He loves his audience and they in turn love him.
These things I know....I was there.
